Netflix's much-anticipated "Squid Game" Season 2 is finally on the horizon, with a scheduled premiere later this year. The streaming giant made the announcement about the second season of the Korean-language survival drama series in a letter to shareholders on Tuesday.
Despite setbacks from last year's strikes delaying some title launches, Netflix is gearing up for an eventful 2024 with an extensive content lineup. Viewers can anticipate the return of popular dramas such as 'The Diplomat' S2, 'Bridgerton' S3, 'Squid Game' S2, and 'Empress' S2. Additionally, unscripted series like 'Tour de France: Unchained' S2, 'Love is Blind' S6, 'F1: Drive to Survive' S6, and 'Full Swing' S2 are in the pipeline. The streaming platform will also introduce new shows like '3 Body Problem' (adapted from the bestselling novel by 'Game of Thrones' showrunners), 'Griselda' (featuring Sofia Vergara, premiering this week), 'The Gentlemen' (directed by Guy Ritchie), 'Eric' (starring Benedict Cumberbatch), 'Avatar: The Last Airbender,' 'Cien Años de Soledad' from Colombia based on Gabriel García Márquez's novel, and 'Senna' from Brazil.
Netflix executives also confirmed the launch of "Emily in Paris" Season 4 later this year.
The initial nine-episode season of "Squid Game" captivated audiences in 2021, depicting a lethal competition among impoverished participants vying for ₩45.6 billion. The series became a massive success for Netflix, receiving 14 Emmy nominations, including Best Drama Series (a historic feat for a non-English-language series) and winning six. "Squid Game" also made history at the 2022 Screen Actors Guild Awards, securing nominations in various categories and winning accolades for Lee Jung-jae and Jung Ho-yeon.
Amid speculation about a second season, Netflix officially confirmed in January 2022 that "Squid Game" Season 2 was in development. Netflix CEO Ted Sarandos expressed confidence in the expanding "Squid Game" universe, stating, "The 'Squid Game' universe has just begun." The franchise has since expanded to include an unscripted competition series, "Squid Game: The Challenge," and an upcoming video game.
In addition to the "Squid Game" update, Netflix also revealed its Q4 2023 earnings on Tuesday, following the announcement of a significant deal to broadcast WWE's "Monday Night Raw" starting in 2025.
